Endurance Test

How long can you watch Tim Kirby doing an interview with this Euro-fascist without rage quitting?

I made it to about 11:30. What did it for me is when he talked about how his opinions in America were comparable to those of a raving homeless guy, but then suddenly he moved to Russia and they were all right and he “fit in.” That reminded me of this exchange from an episode of  The Simpsons:

Lisa: Dad, here’s a thought. If you just gave Mom credit, maybe she could help you.

Homer: Sweetie, you don’t understand. If I can do this myself, then all those lies I told will be true. Don’t you want Daddy’s lies to be true?

I shouldn’t have to tell my readers that the most important thing is whether or not one’s beliefs are true, not whether they happen to be accepted in a particular geographical area. If you have strong views in favor of female genital mutilation, you’re unlikely to get invited to many social occasions in the US or most industrialized countries. In Somalia or Sudan, you’d fit in quite nicely. Horrible ideas don’t stop being horrible just because a lot of people agree with them.

Also I’m not going to get into it here, but let me just say I think Kirby overestimates the extent to which he “fits in” here. We Americans tend to forget that fitting in isn’t simply a matter of your own tastes and feelings, but also the feelings of the group into which you are supposed to assimilate. I suppose that’s a topic for another article though.

I invite all readers to watch that video and post your times to see who can stand it the longest.

He is remarkably inarticulate. People like him have to write because it forces them to structure a semi-coherent sentence whereas while he speaks he just babbles. At one point he says that in America he was like a babbling homeless person but in Russia his opinions are meaningful. That’s sort of the proof in the pudding Kirby, in Russia there has been a complete breakdown of critical thought and thus a homeless babbler is easily viewed as a sage so long as he babbles about how awful the West is.

My impression: Er…uhhhhhh…well ya know….black people were mean to me…dur….

Yeah that thing about opinions blew my fucking mind. I had some dumbass views before I moved to Russia and I think I would be worried if I went to any country where they were just uncritically accepted by everyone.

Also to be fair, I think he overestimates the extent to which people actually respect his views here. Very few people in Russia(perhaps far fewer than in Western countries) give a shit about politics, much less having some kind of ideology. Therefore when some American rocks up and starts babbling about how Russia is superior because X, Y, and Z, they will usually just nod and go along for the sake of being polite.

This also really reminds me of Christians that talk about evil atheists and I think, even if it were true that theists were immoral people it wouldn’t change the fact that your religious beliefs are nonsense. Its about truth. Not what makes you feel good.

Out of curiosity, have you seen Mr Schindler’s last post at http://20committee.com/ ? He says Putin is not going to stop after gobbling up some part of Ukraine, and his “incestous inner circle” wants a lot more than just become confrontational with NATO. This makes me feel afraid for the future, now that WWI is 100 years old… What do you think? Is the confrontation level between Russia and NATO / The West going to get worse, even if Putin obtains a resounding victory in Ukraine?

I would take that with a huge grain of salt. What the WWIII crowd needs to remember is that Ukraine’s army was in shambles before this war even started. The second the Russian military runs up against US and NATO forces, the situation will be reversed. Russia’s already forced to use its conscript forces in Ukraine; against NATO they’ll run out of volunteers very quickly.

Putin cannot afford such a smashing defeat.

I grit my teeth and made it to 13.30 and some nonsense about Russian barbarians, buy a bit later I gave it another stab, but this time only made it another 2 minutes more to his rant about it being an allusion that the mass media in Russia isn’t critical of Putin.
